The Hulk's Green Color: The Untold Story Behind the Design

It's the question that every fan of Marvel Comics and superheroes wants an answer to! The Hulk is such a great figure, a force of nature.

A Superhero Born From Mistake!

So why did Stan Lee make The Hulk green?

It wasn't planned from the start. This beloved Marvel Comics superhero didn't come to life as Green!

It all came from the earliest stories in 1962, where Bruce Banner is turned into a creature, as everyone knows the character today as, the Hulk. We see his transformation, and there is more! Stan Lee created him to be a gray character but things didn't work out quite as intended.

An Unexpected Change Of Color:

Here is an important tidbit for every Marvel Comics fan and anyone that knows the power of this character.

If you have a love for comics, there's nothing like the early issues that come together to create so much great nostalgia and amazing history.

  • The Hulk came to life in the first issue, of The Incredible Hulk #1
  • However, his colors were all messed up due to an awesome quirk in the printing. The printer had trouble with printing out gray ink!
  • This color would show up in every hue from super dark gray to lighter shades and some of the colors looked completely wrong!

For Stan Lee, that was a problem. To get a solution for this incredible hero, he decided to get creative. He thought, why not change the whole thing up? It seemed pretty daring! After a couple of decisions, the best choice came in issue number 2, when Lee opted to make the Hulk green. Lee knew this was the perfect, right decision once he saw how the printing looked!

How Stan Lee Created A Superhero, In Costume (A New Way):

Stan Lee, with his immense experience in comics, didn't see the traditional superhero Costume as being a part of what made this hero stand out from the crowd, or a character who would stand the test of time.

Lee really took a stand for what he thought was going to be one of the most creative, dynamic and truly powerful choices!

  • The Hulk doesn't get his costume from "Lee", even though kids, especially, loved the awesome superhero costume look at the time. He found that putting the Hulk in a typical suit felt off and a bit out of character, or even silly!
  • Lee did give The Hulk, a fun personality with an abundance of new, colorful nicknames.
  • Some of them are hilarious as they reflect a fun approach to writing the stories and making characters so unique. There was the Jade Giant, Green Goliath and Old Greenskin!.

The Hulk's Variations

Once that design came to life in a perfect shade of green! The Hulk was solidified in comic history as we knew him!

It turns out the character keeps changing, and not just for Stan Lee's creative ideas, there are a ton of variations, all part of "Marvel Comics' continuity!

  • There was even a whole new character in the series known as the Red Hulk and this character took on two separate roles.
  • This made the series more intense.

One interesting version was "Mr. Joe Fixit," an antagonist known as a gray hulk! In the more modern iterations of the series. You also got a different Hulk called the "Immortal Hulk!", all of which added a special dynamic.

To the great success of the Hulk's different forms. There are a number of different variations on what the Hulk can look like! For sure you'll remember those red versions but also those colored forms as yellow, orange, blue, black, brown and even purple!!

Each color brings a super cool story with its special unique power, some of those unique gifts included harnessing powers such as the "Uni-Power, giving him a solar-radiation form. The Hulk's amazing powers include being super angry!

What's more awesome is that there was a Spider-Geddon comics release just after the death of Stan Lee, an incredible way to remember his legacy!

The story transformed Lee into this "Spider-hero!" There are all types of creative choices made over time to remember such a great figure like "Stan Lee" who had a major impact on the comic book world and will never be forgotten.

The Hulk, an icon for fans all over, will continue to take audiences through a crazy adventure with all its twists and turns.
