Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, has had quite the journey in Marvel comics! She went from being a pawn in Magneto's game to becoming a near-god-level threat, even creating a reality-warping apocalypse or two! She is powerful; supremely powerful. But now? She finally has a true adversary–one just as terrifying as she is, ready for battle; someone of truly cosmic scale.

Marvel's annual Crypt of Shadows brings creepy tales from the wider universe and the story “Do Androids Dream in the Witch House?” (by Chris Condon, art by Djibril Morissette-Phan, colors by Mattia Iacono) introduces Wanda at her current status; her Emporium in Lotkill, New York. Things go seriously sideways when that scary portal, the Last Door, opens up. What lies beyond? An unbelievably scary creature capable of destroying a reality, a completely terrifying cosmic entity waiting for her– a being named Moridun!

Moridun: The Devourer of Worlds Awaits on the Witches' Road

Wanda made the Last Door to help those in need– another step in her quest to redeem herself. (She is forever burdened by that whole M-Day thing, right?) She settles down; using her Chaos Magic for good – this includes her creation of the Emporium in this storyline! It got totally trashed though, wrecked by the Griever at the End of All Things; leading her on the epic Witches’ Road to face her darkest fears! In this instance, and within this story arc, this creates the conditions that led to Moridun’s capture by this sentient Road. She had a truly brutal encounter with Moridun (the first ever Sorcerer Supreme, totally capable of world-eating). He completely possesses Wanda's soul, which doesn’t quite go so well! She survived by a stroke of unbelievable luck thanks to Hexfinder, recreating the Last Door. But not without extremely grave risks involved!

Moridun’s Revenge: Targeting the Maximoff Bloodline

The Last Door's spontaneous re-opening–revealing that terrible Witches’ Road –suggests Hexfinder’s meddling, suggesting some kind of connection between what exactly caused the portal to open without Wanda knowing! And this connection is extremely significant, because what is revealed involves Moridun! That monster was previously left within the Road (although some can survive the impossible and get out), biding his time until another opportune moment that will unleash him to claim what he desires, namely, Wanda's power; he had previously attacked Wiccan; that really terrifying psychic. But these attempts never went so smoothly; he survived entire universes ending, this fact adds much gravity to his position. He's a Cosmic Parasite, and he’s already targeted Wiccan; this means there are other related targets for this incredibly deadly foe.

Moridun might be immensely terrifying, especially when one considers his massive history within the Marvel Universe itself. However this threat presents one immensely important aspect to remember: This storyline showcases why those choices and plots developed around Wanda and Wiccan were significant, setting this grand plan into motion; leading this powerful foe’s actions; even revealing that Moridun has already possessed both Wanda and Wiccan’s minds, laying anchors; suggesting another even more catastrophic plan to seize full power once he is fully recovered, within that mystical realm of that terrifying Road and his obsession, is completely and utterly unbroken, it can’t be stopped!
