Movies News Talk
You know Ryan Reynolds, the hilarious and charismatic actor who has won hearts (and maybe even broken some bones!) playing the iconic anti-hero, Deadpool. But did you know that his journey with Deadpool started way back in the Comic books, a full decade before his debut on the big screen? The story behind their connection is a hilarious coincidence that eventually led to one of the most successful movie franchises ever!
Now, a lot of people are saying that the studio executive that pitched him the role back in 2004 really understood what would work! After seeing him as Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity, the executive told Ryan, "Trust me, if they ever make a movie about Deadpool, you're the only guy who can play Deadpool." Talk about a big statement!
The executive sent him a stack of Deadpool Comics, but as Ryan admits, he's not the biggest comic book guy. Yet, when he opened one of those comics for the first time, it hit him like a ton of bricks...and made him fall in love with the character forever. Remember that classic line from Deadpool where he jokes about looking like "a cross between Ryan Reynolds and a shar-pei"? It turns out that was a real reference to the actor. Ryan was literally mentioned in the very first Deadpool comic he ever read!
That particular issue, Cable and Deadpool #2, came out in 2004! Ryan was referencing it in an interview years later in 2016, before that wild scene in the third Deadpool Movie, you know the one where Deadpool's trying to stop Logan's resurrection? It's almost like they were destined to work together in some bizarre, comedic cosmic way.
Listen, Deadpool was already a popular character, but Ryan totally blasted his name onto the world stage with those amazing Deadpool movies! Those films made the Merc with a Mouth a pop-culture legend, which isn't bad for a character known for his wacky, self-aware jokes! If we're being honest, Deadpool is about as famous as Iron Man and Captain America right now! It's wild. And, for Ryan to pull off all that success with Deadpool? That's crazy talk!
You already know that Ryan was the heart and soul of those early Deadpool films, the first movie, even the infamous "butt-ugly" version back in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, before things got much, much better! He spent years fighting for his right to bring the craziest superhero to life on the big screen, battling with those studios because a real R-rated Comic book movie had never been done before. So he shot a test video of what the movie would look like, leaked it to the world, and the fans went crazy! It’s how they finally convinced those big shot studios to go for it!
Here's a look back on Deadpool's legacy: From his first appearance in New Mutants in 1990 to getting his own comic book series and growing this insane cult following, Deadpool really took off! The guy can heal from anything, even after being an X-Men villain in the past. You know, with his healing powers and those crazy Fourth Wall breaks? That's all thanks to those creative folks at Marvel. And now that the third movie finally hit screens? You know he's in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he's taking his jokes to a whole new level!
If you haven't seen any of the Deadpool movies yet? Now's the perfect time! It’s Ryan Reynolds' genius and passion, the craziness of the character, and the craziness of the Marvel Cinematic Universe combined! He took on an iconic role and now you know how much time and effort went into it! Plus, it’s just the start for this fourth-wall breaking, meta-Superhero character!
