The Ring Made From a God's Essence Has Green Lantern's New Nemesis
Green Lantern: War Journal #9 by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Montos, Adriano Lucas, and Dave Sharpe has Green Lantern Caolán Shepherd consult with the Book of Oa to ascertain what happened to John Stewart. The book includes the history of the Corps's biggest opponents, the Darkstars, however it makes no reference of the Radiant Dead or the Revenant Queen. Shepherd learns that historical Maltusians previously found a power source connected to a monument honoring the dead Old God Olgrun and his daughter, Queen Ajna.
Named for an ethereal light emanating from the monument they had desecrated, the Maltusians used the power source to form a band of protectors, the Knights of the Dark Star. Olgrun punished the knights by corrupting their bodies, using his might from beyond even though long dead. Claiming Ajna's ring, a vessel built of Olgrun's will that produced a cosmic aberration known as the Dark Star of the Fenn, the knights who would become the Revenants sought to control Olgrun's power.
The threat Olgrun and the radiant dead provide to Green Lantern
Superman first heard the story of Olgrun as he set out to free Warworld from the tyranny of Galactic dictator Mongolus. One of the most strong Old Gods, Olgrun fashioned breathtakingly gorgeous planets. But the great creature descended into lunacy and unleashed damnation on all he came across, even his daughter he killed in a fit of wrath. Olgrun was finally taken down, his power divided into seven facets and buried across the multiverse; Superman recovered one of them.
Unknown to Superman and the rest of the DC Universe, Olgrun was still alive, scheming a last comeback. Olgrun sent his soldiers into the DC Universe using the Radiant Dead and the Revenge Queen in search of a suitable host so Olgrun can rule once more. Following John Stewart, who had lately become one of the most potent entities in the DC Universe after the Green Lantern absorbed a strong cosmic phenomena known as a Godstorm, the Radiant Dead started tracking and hunting.
Ajna's Power Ring: Comparative to Green Lantern's and Others
Not the first evil Power Ring in the DC Universe would Ajna's ring be. While simultaneously replacing their hearts, the Red Lantern rings transform its users into savage, acid-spewing monsters. Those under the Orange Lantern ring are unusually avaricious and cannot concentrate on anything else but their personal needs. The Black Lantern rings produced an enormous army of zombies almost eradicating all life in the DCU, and the Phantom Lantern ring rendered its wearers extremely unstable and seriously dangerous to others and themselves.
But Ajna's ring transcends a "bad Power Ring." It's a vessel that embodies Olgrun personally. One need only look at the devastation caused by the Radiant Dead to demonstrate how terrible Olgrun's power really is, even if fans have yet to witness him in action directly. Not to note, Olgrun was regarded as so strong that even other Old Gods had to accept splitting his power since they couldn destroy him. Unlike other Power Rings, which depend on the Emotional Spectrum, Ajna's ring links to a darker, more terrible force.
Green Lantern must retrieve Ring Or Else for Queen Ajna.
Olgrun has made it very evident via his army and relentless attacks that he will not stop until he lives once more. John's sole chance of beating Olgrun is by destroying the vessel attached to his power for good. But the Revenge Queen is bursting with Olgrun's might and even John, for all his extra strength has proved difficult in combat against her. Although John understands that pursuing this new Power Ring would very probably result in his death, it is the only choice Green Lantern has.
DC Comics currently have War Journal #9 available under Green Lantern.
