Arriving in Batman / Superman: World's Finest #28, Superman's newest replacement, Jimmy Olsen, is adding a funny fresh spin to the venerable S-Shield.
Mister Mxyzptlk has given Jimmy Olsen, the daily planet photographer, fifth-dimensional powers, therefore changing him into the new and improved "Super Jimmy!" Jimmy exchanges his camera for Superman's costume in this issue, with one noteworthy modification: a new "SJ-Shield" replaces the traditional S-Shield.
The "SJ-Shield" is a deft and funny allusion to Jimmy's newly appointed "Super Jimmy." It is conspicuously shown on the front of his suit and on the rear of his cape. This variation on the venerable Superman outfit captures the lighthearted attitude of Mark Waid and Dan Mora's run on World's Finest.
Jimmy's new suit and super-status, for those not familiar with Waid and Mora's World's Finest run, come from a gift from Mister Mxyzptlk, a fifth-dimensional being like Bat-Mite. Mister Mxyzptlk chooses to put Doom-Mite's enormous power on Jimmy, therefore rendering him the last hope for the DCU. Inspired by his friend Superman, Jimmy welcomes his acquired abilities and changes into "Super Jimmy."
First showing in Action Comics #6 in 1938, Jimmy Olsen is a long-standing DC Universe character. Although he has always existed in Superman's universe, he mostly functions as a supporting character. Jimmy front and center in World's Finest by Waid and Mora gives this venerable Superman character the respect he deserves.
Jimmy Olsen assumes the mantle of Superman with an original and funny twist using his fifth-dimensional powers. Certainly a fan favorite, the "SJ- Shield" is evidence of Waid and Mora's inventiveness. For this venerable Superman character, Jimmy's new position as "Super Jimmy" is a pleasant change; it's great to see him take front stage.
