Harley Quinn's Back, Baby! New Costume, New villain Era!
Hold onto your harlequin hats, folks! Harley Quinn is officially back in her villain era— and she's got a brand-new look to prove it! This awesome comeback comes as part of DC Comics' new All-In initiative, launching a thrilling new direction that will hopefully answer many questions raised regarding this character; questions fans had about this character. We are looking at a significant shift. We get a striking redesign and that totally insane new direction.
Harley Quinn #44 (written by Elliott Kalan, art by Mindy Lee, colors by Tríona Farrell, and letters by Lucas Gattoni) starts with Harley totally confused about who she is. She’s bounced between hero and villain, creating identity issues and some very significant inner conflict. To sort it out she returns to her old hangout in Gotham City –Throatcutter Hill–to seek answers. This however gets far more complicated than what might be expected.
This trip back home is far from casual. We get a new chapter for the Clown Princess of Crime and it changes absolutely everything surrounding this character, adding yet another dramatic turning point in a storied arc that completely defines the current trajectory.
Her new costume is epic! It’s a mash-up of her original jester look from Batman: The Animated Series with those iconic pink and blue pigtails she rocked in recent portrayals. She’s sporting that awesome trench coat; cool latex gloves– this is all perfectly designed to make her character incredibly effective in that intended new criminal endeavor. And here’s a crucial observation: The color shift matters!
That iconic red and black of her initial Batman: The Animated Series (Joker's Favor episode) portrayal was directly related to that time as villain. The subsequent shifts in color were all connected to those increasingly heroic periods; which impacted various storylines within DC Comics, yet it was her earlier look, that infamous classic aesthetic that best emphasized those points related to pure villainy.
Fans have wondered for ages where Harley actually belongs. Her path has shown that being clearly categorized isn’t simply easy. She started as a straight-up villain. She has become more of that ambiguous, morally grey anti-hero and she didn’t do so perfectly. Her role with some truly opposite groups – Suicide Squad and the Justice League; some might consider her even part of the Bat-family. Her inconsistency was always clear: the issue highlights her own identity crisis.
The very first page shows the main point and is incredibly well stated “I ain't bad enough for the baddies, or good enough for the goody two-shoes.” This highlights this uncertainty she experiences internally; showing that going full villain fixes this: giving her that direction desperately needed for years. Even though those previous heroic moments displayed growth; they clearly don’t work.
Harley's Destructive Agency kicks off this awesome new storyline! Her unique “business plan?” Committing any acts of destruction people on Throatcutter Hill desire. Smashing heroes? Setting off bombs? She’s your gal! It adds yet another level for Harley, making this transition even more shocking because this takes things to the complete opposite extreme.
This new look and path offer everything audiences want: pure, unadulterated chaos that demonstrates her utter indifference to outside opinion—an act which generates its own levels of entertainment and provides the kind of character and writing only made for pure unfiltered entertainment! This bold choice fully emphasizes her freedom, and a satisfying return to a path previously walked upon that defines this particular version.
That villainous return for Harley feels like fresh air! She displays growth but excels through sheer uninhibited fun. This makes a very satisfying choice. And it shows a commitment to fulfilling the audience's own desires! This was an obvious move: The audience asked and the comic books decided to actually answer these requests which really does create memorable impacts for these types of stories. Get ready, because she’s about to unleash pure chaotic mayhem upon Gotham City!
