One of the most recognizable towns in comic books, Gotham City is seen to be constantly developing as the years pass on, ever more sophisticated. Batman will eventually seem to require a significant tech update as Gotham metropolis changes from the Gothic metropolis it is now to a dystopian cyberpunk scene including mech suits.
Particularly in Batman Beyond, fans have seen a few peeks at a futuristic version of Gotham; but, there's another fascinating glimpse at the future of Gotham in Detective Comics #27 by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy. Batman's tech is always changing to fit the fresh enemies afflicting Gotham, this glimpse of the future indicates.
Batman is portrayed sporting a robotic costume to fight against an unidentified adversary and a new kind of Chemo, but Robin's new armor is likewise mechanized. Designwise, the Gotham scene is likewise distinctly cyberpunk; things get much more interesting when Batman is depicted wielding a massive mech to fight against a big robotic Talon from the Court of Owls.
Though whole franchises are founded on this basic concept, views at DC and Marvel's possible futures are always entertaining. Series and titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2099 or DC's Batman Beyond — the TV and the books — are totally predicated on the idea of investigating the far future of familiar locales. Seeing a city evolve over a few hundred years is fascinating, especially given secret organizations like the Court of Owls that are fixated on governing Gotham, one has little reason to expect that these institutions will dissolve with time. Naturally, then, their technology will change with the times.
Many of Batman's adversaries are modeled on the well-known "mad scientist" cliché; examples include Mr. Freeze, a brilliant inventor and scientist, or groups like the Court of Owls, with unlimited riches and resources and capable design ability for something like a massive mech. Though Gotham will always be a dark and filthy town rife with crime, that crime will evolve with time. Batman will ultimately have to start battling with Mutants, as shown in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, or massive mech soldiers and robotic enemies, instead of the usual crooks who merely want to mug people.
Among DC's best mad scientists, Batman specializes in ingenious creation. Batman's gear and tools will evolve as the world's technology develops and he comes across fresh materials and methods. Batman began in a fabric Batsuit and just a few smoke pellets, but over time he would progress to hover gliders and massive mech suits that can readily tear down structures. Gotham City will eventually transform from that rain-soaked city that can hardly fit into an utter mech lover's fantasy in DC's dark future.
Gotham will always be a filthy and dark town rife with crime, but as time passes that crime will evolve. Batman will encounter a new kind of criminal in Gotham City going forward, using cutting-edge technologies and strong mechs to cause havoc. The Dark Knight will be seriously challenged by these mech warriors, which will force him to modify his plans and update his own weapon to fight this fresh danger.
The coming of mech warriors in Gotham's future points to a change in the nature of crime. Criminals will hunt increasingly complex ways to accomplish their objectives as technology develops. Advanced weapons combined with mechanical armor will provide a new degree of risk in Gotham City, so Batman's task becomes much more challenging. To face this new wave of criminality and guard the city he pledges to preserve, the Dark Knight will need all his intellect, might, and technological ability.
DC Comics currently has Detective Comics #27 on sale! Gotham City in DC Comics will always be a dynamic and always changing scene. The city presents fresh possibilities as well as problems as it grows. The narrative "Twenty-seven" offers a view of a possible future whereby Gotham transforms into a cyberpunk city with high skyscrapers, sophisticated technology, and a new class of criminals. The arrival of Mutants, mech warriors, and other future dangers will compel Batman to modify his crime-fighting tactics and welcome fresh technologies to guard Gotham.
