The world of Godzilla is known for epic Monster battles, but there's one story that really stands out!
Godzilla: Oblivion - A Bleak Ending
While Godzilla movies keep going, one Comic Book story gives us an ending. It's a truly remarkable story!
Created by Joshua Fialkov and Brian Churilla, Godzilla: Oblivion (#1-5) starts with scientists on Earth A! This earth has no giant monsters. This crew decides to test interdimensional travel, opening up a portal to a very different version of earth: Earth B!
What makes it memorable and truly terrifying, is this version of Earth is full of giant Monsters.
The Monsters Attack!
What unfolds next, and brings terror to Earth A? You won't believe it, but once these monsters see a new opportunity, and see a way out, they go on a rampage destroying everything in sight! Even though Godzilla is known as the King of Monsters! He can't hold them back. He keeps battling but Earth A becomes devastated by giant creatures! That was so disturbing!
The humans left on Earth A had only one chance, a really harsh decision and that's evacuation! Using what's left of their tech they make portals, helping them escape their world. They leave Godzilla alone in a world filled with other kaiju who fear and loathe him. It truly seems they left Godzilla stranded!
Two Worlds Destroyed
What is so intense about this story? There are so many layers of Tragedy that it really hits you hard! These monsters wiped out two entire worlds before it finally "ended!" There was nothing triumphant about the victory of mankind. It took great sacrifices!
- They completely gave up an entire planet.
- It came at great expense. For humanity
If there was another world like earth A with portal tech? Well there wouldn't be a second Earth B left to save those that may also have created something new that would make such a dangerous experiment! What's worse? There's little chance of saving any more worlds! In the aftermath of it all there was only disaster!
Godzilla's Fate:
There's plenty of grim elements of this ending! We get to really see the struggles of a hero, who gives his everything to a world he believed in. And that is something worth considering and appreciating about what makes the movie so haunting and tragic. Godzilla tried hard! Fighting so bravely! The monster could not win! Even as the King of Monsters was left in ruins! Stranded. It's really easy to feel bad for Godzilla! With the human world turning its back, what will the King of Monsters do next?
A Second Chance:
It may look grim, and the story ends terribly but it wasn't entirely hopeless!
If you only look at the ending for the sake of victory, you won't see all of the aspects of it all. You could even argue this is actually a happy ending! Earth A might be a world in ruins but those that were still left behind now have something truly amazing. A chance. Since everyone from Earth A had the chance to leave to another Earth? What makes that so compelling?
- Earth B had the population it desperately needed.
- All those people that left from earth A may be able to have another shot. Giving mankind a whole new life, while giving the world on Earth B the opportunity to recover, this time from mankind and not the invasion of the monsters.
Godzilla: Oblivion has an incredible story and ends up in a devastating situation. There's really no winning in a war, is there? Humanity managed to escape an unimaginable horror but at a major price and it ends up really proving the unstoppable force of kaiju! But to think that humanity had Godzilla as its protector all along and still walked away. It leaves an emotional and intense thought! While it isn't something to get excited about this incredible and bleak look into this monster and his world gives audiences something that isn't a feel good story but definitely a reminder of what nature really is.
The series continues. But Godzilla: Oblivion gives us an incredible look! One to ponder and wonder about, not as a monster movie but one of great tragedy and loss. But if you enjoy that type of film and enjoy giant monster movies? The story will leave you speechless and thinking long after you finish! The series also takes a moment to reflect on its evolution and changes. A cultural icon that never stays the same! From Japan to the rest of the world the Godzilla series is a must-see and continues to adapt to modern times. If this storyline is intriguing to you dive deeper! There might just be other exciting adventures for the beloved monster out there!
