Although the Ferengi are well-known across the Star Trek universe for their avarice and corruption, one planet—Farius Prime—has lately come to light as even more terrible.
Data seeks his brother Lore in Star Trek Annual 2024 and turns to Chief Miles O'Brien for aid. O'Brien says Faire Prime, a planet he once went undercover on, is a "currency economy that makes Ferenginar look civilized."
Originally presented in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as a criminal paradise run by the Orion Syndicate, Farius Prime was first Tasked with breaking into the Syndicate, O'Brien highlighted the widespread crime and desperation on the planet. Although the criminal groups lived in a kind of "cold war," Lore's actions have sent Farius Prime into an even more dire condition and transformed it into a full-fledged warzone.
Chief O'Brien compares the Ferengi homeworld's economy with Faire Prime's to show their clear differences. Earth and the Federation have advanced past money by the 24th century to create a post-scarcity economy that has eliminated war, crime, and poverty. Farius Prime's people are driven to extreme means of survival, yet it stays caught in a cycle of poverty and crime. This contrasts sharply with the Ferengi, who are progressively departing from their essentially profit-driven way of life.
Faire Prime keeps spiraling down into poverty, crime, and hopelessness while the Ferengi gradually veers toward a more compassionate road. Although the Ferengi might one day stop depending on money, there is no indication Farius Prime will follow suit, so reinforcing its status as one of the toughest and most deprived planets in the Star Trek universe.
