Fans of Marvel Comics are all too familiar with the wisecracking and fast-talking Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool, or more formally Wade Wilson. But you might be surprised to learn about DC's Deadpool! And even if you know about Deathstroke, this is a whole other level of connection, as there are connections that were actually influenced by the character.
In the DC Universe, this is one of the most fun twists to the classic world! The anti-hero that we get is an alternate version of Deathstroke, or more formally Slade Wilson, but this time in the Antimatter Universe! And if you aren't up on your Comics history, the Antimatter Universe features the opposite counterparts of heroes! The Justice League, for instance, has their evil doubles known as the Crime Syndicate. But that means our classic Deathstroke villain has a totally different take!
When comparing DC's Deadpool with Marvel's Deadpool, it appears the Antimatter Deathstroke in Superman / Batman Annual #1, a comic published in 2006, seems more like an anti-hero than a villain. It is the classic Deathstroke villain that usually is known for his skills and a cold, calculated, and often ruthless personality, where our DC Universe Deadpool is full of quips, sarcasm, and the tendency to break the fourth wall! The Deadpool co-creator is the main inspiration behind these unique elements that are often shown in Deadpool comics and the Deadpool movie!
The exciting debut of Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (after the massive success of the movie series starring Ryan Reynolds, most recently with Deadpool & Wolverine that hit the summer box office) has people wondering about the DCU Deadpool, since he only briefly appeared in the early 2000s. You could even see if any information or speculation surrounding the Antimatter Deathstroke pops up in the news. The characters and stories of Deadpool comics, like the popular Deadpool series, are very well-loved and popular.
The origin of DC's Deadpool actually takes us back to a comic, "Superman / Batman Annual #1," and Rob Liefield, a Deadpool creator! It all starts when the Deathstroke assassin takes on a task: He's going to assassinate Bruce Wayne, but it seems the plans change and the antimatter version of Deathstroke steps in instead. What was a Deadpool villain soon transforms into a quipping and almost comedic character that even causes some tension with the classic Deathstroke! It also serves as a testament to Deathstroke real name (Slade Wilson), as it seems his popularity with audiences has lasted a very long time!
While you won't be finding him in a Deadpool series or a stand-alone Deadpool movie, this is still an interesting idea. Fans can look back on the original appearances of Antimatter Deathstroke, as the Antimatter counterpart from the original story is well-known. A popular place to find the Superman / Batman Annual #1 is at your local comic book shops or online.
DC Comics continues to find exciting new additions to the characters that make up the DC Universe. In the case of Antimatter Deathstroke, this DCU Deadpool appears in a similar manner to the character from Marvel Comics, however, this anti-hero version is only in the Antimatter Universe! This could be a fun parallel to how Deadpool was originally envisioned as a Deadpool villain, which has changed in later appearances!
