Damian Wayne quietly is creating a superhero network.
Damian Wayne is poised for something significant. At last ready to go on from Robin, he is doing it in a manner that reflects Dick Grayson's path to become Nightwing. Damian is quietly assembling a network of supporters outside of Batman's reach, much as Dick is.
Flatline, his "villain," love interest, and sister Maya Ducard—who goes by Nobody—are part of this network. They comprise a team, not only friends. Maya guides Batman and Damian toward Bane on Dinosaur Island in Batman & Robin #11. Batman is cautious of her, but Damian believes Maya totally.
This reflects Dick Grayson's road toward Nightwing. Dick developed close bonds with Aqualad and Kid Flash, so creating the Teen Titans. These connections proved Robin could have adventures of his own, independent of Batman.
Damian's future then seems to be rather like Dick's. He might assemble his own squad comprising Nobody, Flatline, and others he has encountered. Once Damian splits off, it will be simple to view him as a hero in his own right, much as Nightwing.
What Does This Mean Regarding Damian Wayne's Batman Future?
Damian as Batman has been glimpsed in other timelines, most notably in Batman #666. Always fascinated by the cowl, he sees himself as the proper heir. Damian outgrowing Robin does not mean he will necessarily become Batman though. It suggests he is beginning to have aspirations and wants apart from Batman.
In his solo series, Robin, Damian shows his path and developing social life. He is beginning to go through events including romance, high school drama, and even improving his relationship with his father. For Damian, who used to be as committed to the goal as his dad, if not more so, this is a major turn-around.
Damian's discovery that some values transcend the Bat-mantle Growing up means wanting an identity different than just Batman. In his character development, it marks a major turning point. For Damian Wayne, this is only the start of what looks to be an interesting trip. He is prepared to blaze his own path free from the shadow of his father. The next developments greatly excite us!
