Hold onto your capes, comic book fans!  This isn't your average superhero brawl!   We are talking about Captain Atom – one of the strongest members of the Justice League– (yes, stronger than Superman; that's right!)– totally dissing Wally West (The Flash)! This revelation is unveiled in Jenny Sparks #3 (written by Tom King, art by Jeff Spokes, and colors by Clayton Cowles)  The entire conflict and Captain Atom's deep issues and perspectives have been a surprisingly subtle element that has played throughout those previous volumes; yet the immense revelations surrounding this conflict makes this entire issue far more impacting than you might imagine.

It starts when Jenny Sparks (leader of The Authority) teams up with Superman and the Justice League to take down Captain Atom (who’s gone rogue, for some totally unspecified reasons, for the moment). Things get wild. Atom takes hostages! A rescue plan is required – bringing The Flash (Wally West) into this already very explosive and chaotic scenario, making those existing elements even more tense and precarious, yet a totally thrilling setup which builds an entirely new level of anticipation.  And Captain Atom’s perspective drops another bombshell that would have some totally unexpected consequences, greatly affecting what would otherwise have seemed completely unremarkable!

Captain Atom's task? A straightforward objective which is implied throughout various story points before the climactic reveal of Captain Atom’s views. He uses his incredible powers; using his abilities and raw force to capture hostages, resulting in those needed rescue measures which eventually introduces Wally into this equation – using his super speed to zip in and out with those helpless people and bring those individuals into a location that ensures their safety. Things don’t go exactly to plan. Wally West gets tossed into the ocean by the hyper-powered Captain Atom! The resulting hostage confrontation gives us Atom’s epic takedown of Wally West!

Atom doesn't merely dislike Wally. He is utterly disrespectful! This moment showcases his immense raw power and deeply ingrained dislike of heroes, in this case The Flash.  He makes it clear Wally's status as a "Legacy Hero" (the third Flash, after Jay Garrick and Barry Allen) is why Captain Atom holds him in such utter contempt! The very word "superhero" seems laughable and ludicrous when associated with this less significant Flash! This surprisingly casual attitude showcases something way bigger; this entire thing highlights deep, complicated problems involved with being an underrated legacy character!

Yet there are still many exceptions; even many very famous and critically loved ones!

Wally West is seriously well-regarded amongst fans and the fact he continues having incredibly positive story arcs reinforces this idea even within the storytelling narrative.
