Broly has risen to become an iconic Dragon Ball villain, rivaling Goku's immense power, but the origins of this Legendary Super Saiyan is surprising. Find out how he was inspired by one of the most under-appreciated transformations!
Broly was a creative spark between the screen writer Takao Koyama and designer Akira Toriyama back in 1993. Originally intended for a Dragon Ball Z Movie called "Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan." His evil personality and rivalry with Goku have created amazing storylines and iconic battles! But he had a long journey.
For a long time, Broly existed in his own universe! His "Broly Triple Threat" movies were considered "non-canon." That means it wasn't part of the original manga or anime series. However, he eventually made his official debut in a "Dragon Ball Z Movie" titled, "Dragon Ball Super: Broly" in 2018, which shifted him into the main story!
You would think that the idea of Broly came from a very epic inspiration, maybe even another classic Dragon Ball character! In 1995, Broly's creator, Takao Koyama, revealed how he drew inspiration for Broly. It turns out that watching Trunks use "Super Saiyan 3rd Grade", a version of Super Saiyan. This form, though it may sound intimidating, was viewed as underwhelming and ineffective in the series.
It's true that this Super Saiyan form is one that has its critics! It's a lot more muscular and is described as 100% of a fighter's power. But the reality of it was Trunks couldn't fight very well due to this enhanced bulk and ended up falling short when fighting against Cell. Many believe that "Super Saiyan 3rd Grade", also known as the "Super Saiyan Third Grade", is more about being visually interesting and an example of how much power is needed, even though this form may have contributed to making Broly so compelling!
Yes, the Broly movies and anime episodes are accessible for viewing! While "Super Saiyan 3" has been widely accepted into the story, the third grade, more or less faded out of the story and "Trunks Super Saiyan". You can keep an eye out as a Dragon Ball Z Movie could incorporate this Super Saiyan form if they feel like they want to bring it back!
