Following the execution of Emperor Palpatine and the damage of the second execution Star in "Return of the Jedi," the Battle of Jakku was the last significant conflict between the Galactic Empire and the New Republic. It signified the start of the New Republic's rule and acted basically as the last nail in the coffin for the Empire. Since the remnants of the Empire fled and finally regrouped as the First Order, this decisive fight is also a major event setting the scene for the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy.
