The unexpected hero’s identity, revealed only in this amazing final part, was shocking:  Sazed—a scholar and Terrisman. He is revealed to always have had that ultimate power to restore the world! This changed the entire feel of everything we'd seen and it's truly emotional, showcasing those moments of loss, and immense sacrifice made for a very specific and totally unexpected victory and redemption of this quiet, extremely brilliant individual.

Philip Pullman's Northern Lights presents Lyra, who thinks she’s an orphan— only to later discover this isn’t actually true, bringing immense betrayal and heartache at the heart of the whole storyline! It really did matter that Mrs. Coulter is her terrible mother, and Lord Asriel her equally cruel father; these characters who had long ago seemingly left their child to carry on that completely heartless pursuit of further research and exploration.

This twist remains absolutely devastating; Lyra’s journey was far more compelling as this aspect played out.

This wasn't a villain to overcome. That shadow creature haunting Ged? It was Ged himself! His mistake’s result is that the dark side remains always part of him; this identity was haunting; and that moment was unforgettable. To name that shadow Ged made it truly profound.  That made for one incredibly shocking yet appropriate conclusion.
