Whoa! A Spontaneous Multiverse Created in Blue Beetle?!
Blue Beetle: A DC Star's Improvised Multiverse Mashup!
Blue Beetle (released August 18th, 2023), one of the highest-rated (but unfortunately, lowest-grossing) DCEU films, created some surprisingly awesome moments. Even after the DCEU was canceled and moved into the DC Universe (DCU), one actor completely improvised a line that might just have created a brand new multiverse completely of his own invention! It really sounds wild; this creative accident, is what this article explores!
We got the scoop during an exclusive interview at NYCC with Harvey Guillén. He plays Dr. Sanchez in Blue Beetle—but things go way deeper. According to Guillén, he offhandedly invented a connection between Dr. Sanchez and his What We Do In The Shadows character, Guillermo de la Cruz. It is truly one of those totally wild behind-the-scenes anecdotes and this particular point alone is why fans want to explore and look into more anecdotes! While not officially canon, its possibility is completely plausible given those elements within this specific storyline; generating great appreciation amongst DC fans for those behind the scenes moments!
Guillén's Improv: A Multiversal Masterpiece?
Here's what Guillén said about this creative moment: "You know, Dr. de la Cruz was not in the script. I threw that in as a joke, because Ángel Manuel Soto, the director, is a fan of Shadows. And I said my full name, because, 'My name is not Sanchez, pen---a, it's Jose Morales' and I said the full Mexican name, which is, like, 20 names. At the end, I added 'de la Cruz' as a joke, and I didn't think it was gonna make it. But he was like, 'Hey, Warner Bros. says it's okay.' They never stopped it, they never flagged it, so now, I made a multiverse where the doctor is related to Guillermo. And, I've also created other characters, other places where I can throw myself in a little bit. And if I can, I want to create a world where Guillermo, is connected to several characters around the multiverse. [Laughs]"
The director Ángel Manuel Soto was a huge fan and approved this incredible accident and it ended up remaining! The studio went along with it! Guillén headcanons Dr. Sanchez and Guillermo as related! While not official, given those loose multiverse possibilities inherent in much of DC lore, along with the ongoing creative plans around these characters this certainly presents a fun way to approach expanding a character beyond its initial plot.
Dr. de la Cruz: A Fleeting but Memorable Role
Dr. Sanchez (or José Francisco Morales Rivera de la Cruz, to use his full name), worked initially for Blue Beetle's villain Victoria Kord before changing sides and helping the hero, only to eventually be tragically killed by OMAC. That final death ends this storyline’s dramatic progression, however those small creative flourishes that this event generated is precisely why we are looking at this here. Despite being a brand new character and lacking official confirmation; and given that his creation within this unique DC setting is why we really want to remember and explore its ongoing impact!
James Gunn only confirmed Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) will be in the DCU. The likelihood of Dr. de la Cruz's appearance within any additional storytelling remains low! Even Guillén's comments hint that his death is still canon. And this further makes his multiverse connection really interesting.
Guillén's Multiverse: A Personal Canon?
Whether Guillén's "multiverse" simply implies family relations between different characters within those fictional worlds; or the implication involves the two being actually the same person, however unlikely. It's totally clear this is more fun; and emphasizes just how easy it really could be to just invent an entirely new universe, and make your dream a reality!
Guillén completely explains his "multiverse" vision; using his unique view that these characters become completely interconnected; which demonstrates an artistic intent far exceeding this single appearance! Even though that film exists within an officially non-canonical universe now; this storyline's characters were officially created and canonically appeared during those specific moments! His created family ties between these fictional characters adds to his legacy and creates new possibilities to build these universes. Even these side comments have an unexpectedly creative role that should've made the studio want to completely develop this concept!
Conclusion: An Accidental Masterpiece, For Sure!
This was completely unexpected, demonstrating another incredibly surprising yet perfectly welcome outcome that could potentially occur from even an easily forgotten or ignored moment; showing just how some seemingly unimportant, even simple choices and creative elements could completely lead to completely new creative development which is precisely the kind of story the DC fandom will likely want more of.
That spontaneous creation adds an interesting storyline! Those fun creative aspects around these interconnected characters is only something we're going to see grow!
