In an interview with DC, Young Justice's dual showrunners, Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti, answered viewer questions. Among them was how they estimate the amount of time between seasons, causing the duo to elaborate on the five-year time gap between seasons 1 and 2. Weisman explains:
We needed a significant Time Jump between the first two seasons to fully convey what our series was about, i.e. GROWING UP. After that, it's mostly about what feels right. There are always things we want to skip in order to reveal them later.
These time jumps are ideal for Young Justice. Most animated shows are time-frozen, with characters who do not age or experience time. This would have completely damaged the coming-of-age story for Young Justice's main characters. Adding the time leaps allows each character to age explicitly from season to season, bringing them closer to their adult form and reflecting the major subject.
Furthermore, the temporal leaps offer abundant opportunities for storytelling. The leaps set up future narratives that capitalize on the audience's familiarity with the original material. Wesiman highlighted how this strategy made organizing a season very simple, as the tales only needed to catch up with their characters. As Weisman explained:
Young Justice has a time hop between seasons, however the second season had the most significant gap of five years. Young Justice showcases DC heroes and sidekicks in their childhood, navigating superherodom and adolescence. Each season is set many years after the preceding season, usually only one or two years. Young Justice Season 2 featured a considerably longer hiatus between seasons, which had a specific purpose.
Cartoon Network showed Young Justice for two seasons before canceling it. It was eventually relaunched for DC Universe, DC's streaming service, before Young Justice season 4 debuted on HBO Max. Young Justice season 5 has not been confirmed, but the show has also not been officially canceled. As a result, Young Justice may return at some point in the DCU's future, possibly with an even larger time jump than Season 2 - but this would not serve the same goal as the previous timeskip.
Young Justice's temporal jumps appear to serve two purposes. For starters, they emphasize the series' coming-of-age theme and provide a legitimate passage of time for it. Second, the time jump opens up a plethora of different narratives, allowing the series to reveal significant events that occurred between seasons. Vietti concludes:
Time leaps clearly create a mystery at the start of each season. We know our audience will want to know what happened between seasons, and we can pluck out the highlights during a new season, giving us plenty of stuff to write about.
