Holy moly, DC Comics just dropped a bombshell at NYCC 2024! The legendary Vertigo imprint is officially back from the dead after nearly five years! This is seriously huge for DC, because this imprint's known for that bold, mature storytelling and completely changed what comics were able to be and what they were expected to do and made their impact strongly felt on multiple levels, on both fans and creators!

And it gets even better: DC announced their brand new flagship title that marks this totally amazing relaunch—giving fans plenty of things to get hyped about, including the incredible amount of creativity brought into this new era. It shows just how much passion DC clearly has for what the brand actually means, demonstrating immense care and responsibility for both fanbase and long term creative continuity and direction that every company should prioritize, especially those with older legacy issues. There is an intention to respect the long history!

The Nice House by the Sea: Vertigo's New Era Begins!

On October 19th, 2024, during the Jim Lee and Friends panel at NYCC, DC made that huge announcement; bringing Vertigo back and using The Nice House By The Sea (by James Tynion IV, art by Alvaro Martínez Bueno, and colors by Jordie Bellaire) as its new flagship title. That’s not only awesome— but this makes perfect sense, especially given the focus; Vertigo’s return to those creator-owned comics; those deeply mature stories intended specifically for mature audiences, showing that those specific demographics would continue to receive attention and support!

Vertigo’s arrival way back in 1993 was huge!  Editor Karen Berger's brainchild, it gave DC that essential creative space to really, truly deliver mature comics! It becomes a super popular, legendary brand, showcasing some insanely cool and influential stories (think The SandmanSwamp ThingPreacherFables, and Hellblazer!).  

But sadly, Vertigo faced issues and a subsequent decline, later becoming eventually discontinued. Why? Some core titles went to DC’s main comic line (thus diminishing some of Vertigo’s own independent strength!), then finally becoming officially discontinued by January 2020; making its spot now held by DC Black Label—all in an effort to consolidate those various brands.

The Nice House by the Sea: A New Beginning for Vertigo

James Tynion IV's The Nice House by the Sea’s decision to align under the Vertigo banner signifies this awesome chance to once more promote creator-owned comics! The series had initial release earlier this year and made for incredibly appealing content for various reasons, showcasing many mature themes along with the bold storytelling needed for such a new iteration, showing immense confidence and capability. The popularity is there, the audience exists for it and DC seems very aware that their decision not to support Vertigo further earlier had severely harmed DC and now they want to once more establish what they are about!

Tynion IV is absolutely stoked that The Nice House by the Sea leads Vertigo's revival; issues #1-3 get reprinting immediately, then #4 drops on October 30th (all showing off that iconic Vertigo logo). It creates those powerful narratives but is a really strong indication and an important part of those messaging intended that a bold step towards expanding creative capabilities for all individuals involved has indeed finally happened, with positive changes occurring which affect every involved.
