Marvel Comics has revealed a relaunch of the X-Men series, including a fresh iteration of the flagship title Uncanny X-Men penned by Gail Simone. Fans have been excited about this series since it was first revealed; now Marvel has released a teaser together with preview pages suggesting the first adventure for Simone's all-star mutant squad.
This new Uncanny X-men volume will bring fresh characters, a throwback to the venerable X-Men team books, and a new primary location. Marvel has made it abundantly evident that this volume will be ambitious and exciting, but Simone's strength is more grounded, character-based narrative. Known as "the Outliers," this new era of Uncanny X-Men is poised to bring a fresh batch of mutants to the franchise along with a menacing new enemy. Gambit and Rogue, who is in Mexico battling a dragon, are reunited on the preview pages for Uncanny X-Men #1. This mix of classic X-Men clichés and well-known characters suggests right away that Simone is returning to a formula she knows. While implying that the issue will start with a self-contained battle against the dragon Sadurang before turning focus to the bigger plot that will occupy the first arc, the preview also offers a taste of the tone and style of the book, both narratively and artistically.
Simone has admitted the legacy of the Uncanny X-Men title and the obligations accompanying writing it. She wants to build a welcome mat for all readers: new, returning, and lifetime since she knows everyone has an X-Man that speaks to them personally. She wants to deliver great action and big personalities but concentrate on the humanity of the characters.
Writer of Marvel's other flagship X-title, X-Men, Simone and Jed Mackay are in a sense the ideal caretakers of this new era. These are writers who understand how to produce fresh ideas within known structures instead of totally rethinking the form. This strategy lets them respect the X-Men's legacy while also bringing fresh and fascinating ideas.
With Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, and the power-couple of Gambit and Rogue in line-up, the next Uncanny X-Men volume stacks some of the most recognizable and beloved heroes. Given that what Simone does with these significant mutant figures in Uncanny will define their trajectory in this new era, her responsibility becomes even more daunting.
Simone offers to this new position a lot of expertise. Having spent decades in the business, her work on DC's Birds of Prey, for example, demonstrates her more than ability to create a team book loaded with fascinating personalities. Readers should be sure that during this transitional phase for Marvel's X-Office Simone is central.
Both Mackay and Simone will present fresh chapters in X-history, so bringing in a more familiar status quo for the franchise and a new horizon of opportunities. Although readers of X-Men can surely lament the passing of the Krakoan Era, they should also realize that this is a period of endless possibilities for the show since fresh slate of creators are eager to share remarkable X-Men stories.
