Titans #16: Dick Grayson as Robin! A Blast From the Past

Holy nostalgia, Batman! In Titans #16 (DC Comics), Dick Grayson, our beloved Nightwing, is rocking the classic red, yellow, and green of his Robin suit! It's a seriously amazing throwback for longtime fans, a truly nostalgic trip and incredibly amazing surprise for anyone who grew up reading those awesome Teen Titans comics. And, honestly? This was totally unexpected! A truly epic moment!  Tom Taylor, Lucas Meyer, and Adriano Lucas hand off to the new creative team John Layman and Pete Woods who clearly take it upon themselves to begin this truly remarkable shift to older and more established versions of the Teen Titans' history; a surprising choice which is a surprisingly excellent design decision given how beloved those old designs truly are for fans! Expect even more blasts from the past in Titans #17 (out November 20, 2024)!

The entire Titans team—Starfire, Raven, Donna Troy, Arsenal, Cyborg, and Beast Boy—are all sporting their classic Teen Titan looks.  That awesome throwback, that nostalgic callback, adds incredible power! This happens for a good reason: far beyond simple nostalgia.

Things are way more complicated.   The Titans go from their modern looks to these classic teen costumes. But this sudden shift—visible only in one quick panel before reverting to their current suits—leaves us stunned. Also; there's this incredible detail which might otherwise be overlooked: They're younger– like teens, not the grown adults they are now! It looks bizarre! The perspective shows Donna Troy; initially chalking it up as a weirdly intense déjà vu.

Later in the issue, this all makes perfect sense: It’s the work of the infamous Clock King, he totally manipulates the Titans’ memories and throws them into this intense temporal mess–he uses this temporal manipulation to briefly weaken these characters and gain an opportunity to defeat them in battle! This all allows him to briefly incapacitate them–he wants them captured and ready to whisk them away for unknown purposes, only discovered at a later date. Luckily Donna breaks free of that temporal disruption; and makes use of that unexpected, rapid shift toward more established moments to combat this villain. Then the episode ends at this cliffhanger. We're not getting more info in this exact point, only after reading a sequel.

Titans #16 shows a big hint towards that nostalgic journey. Those classic Titans costumes definitely deserve a lot more screen time; which could happen in the upcoming issue, and is heavily hinted.   The preview blurb for Titans #17 is all about that temporal manipulation: “It’s a new day in the DCU, and the future is bright! Why, then, are the Titans looking backward, reliving their most horrific and traumatic moments, again and again, stuck in an endless loop?” The storyline strongly implies this team revisits the past; therefore those incredible classic Titans suits are certainly set to make a big comeback. This is an intensely nostalgic and hugely suspenseful moment; with huge potential.
