Sonic The Hedgehog #70 seems to be hinting at Surge and Kit's redemption, and if that's the case, it's happening way too fast. Some fans are worried that Surge and Kit, the evil cyborg twins, might join the Restoration for real. And it seems like those worries might actually come true.
A small detail in Sonic The Hedgehog #70, written by Evan Stanley, illustrated by Aaron Hammerstrom, inked by Matt Froesem, colored by Reggie Graham, with assistant colors by Jonathon Dobbs and Rik Mack, and letters by Shawn Lee, strongly suggests this is happening. During a charity race secretly orchestrated by the villain Clutch, Surge and Kit become heroes by chasing away Sonic, who is temporarily working with Dr. Eggman to investigate sabotage.
Surge and Kit are clearly happy when they're declared heroes over the loudspeaker and on the big screen. They soak up the adoration of the crowd cheering for them. Surge even says, with a smile, that they are heroes.
Some readers were worried when Surge and Kit seemed to join the Restoration a few issues ago, only to be relieved when it was revealed they had hidden motives. The same fans might have expected Kit, the more timid one, to enjoy being a hero. After all, he was already tempted by Sonic and his friends before and seems to just be following Surge to please her.
However, it's concerning that Surge seems happy with the praise. Surge is the more dangerous of the two cyborgs, which was clear during her epic battle with Sonic. She's basically a psychopath with a warped ideology. So seeing her seem happy when called a hero is troubling because becoming good would mean rejecting the most interesting parts of her character.
While Kit is more of a follower, he's shown that he can explode with unbridled rage during situations involving Surge. If Surge becomes good, this could eliminate any future emotional outbursts from Kit. Even if Surge and Kit do reject their evil ways by the end of this arc, one positive is that Surge might still have trouble treating Kit with respect. It's a sad dynamic, but also very powerful, because readers can't help but feel sorry for Kit and dislike Surge for treating him poorly.
Of course, Surge and Kit becoming good would be a great example of character development, which is always good storytelling, but it shouldn't happen so quickly. Surge needs to stay a twisted, sadistic psychopath and Kit needs to deal with Surge's abuse for a little while longer. Hopefully, this unsettling scene is just one of many showing Surge and Kit's long journey to eventually leaving their evil ways behind, because IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog can still benefit from them as tragic villains.
