Power Girl (Earth-2's version of Supergirl) has had a complicated history; especially given her sometimes questionable costume design and general presentation as a character that’s slightly odd given the more modern versions and portrayals which would have given the same character an entirely new perspective, changing many things about her origins and her motivations.  But she’s back in her own series! After all those times appearing largely sidelined or briefly, and ultimately mostly off the main stage as an unimportant character,  she returns;  with a seriously compelling new start in DC Comics’ Dawn of DC initiative which launched her back into public recognition.   She even got a new first name, Paige –and traded that cape for a jacket; bringing her into line with Superman's family's looks (from 2023).  Her costume did change significantly; that key element that became synonymous with her, the famous chest window remained.

This new redesign has created an interesting re-interpretation! While previously oval-ish or angular, it’s now exactly that classic House of El symbol seen in other Kryptonian heroes. She's making her position totally obvious – and that's cool!

Our Thoughts on Power Girl’s New Look

Comic book page: Power Girl looks sad as she explains her costume. Image

Power Girl's previous place in DC was problematic: related to Superman but oddly separated and not seen as part of the whole Superman family. This makeover perfectly solves this problem. This new design combines elements which demonstrates those things, highlighting those elements needed to highlight just what the creators truly intended to achieve, as the design alone tells every individual why it makes her look powerful but related at the same time. This is very subtle storytelling techniques which help viewers connect the details which may otherwise not appear clear!

The "chest window"? Too recognizable to change it entirely.   This updated House of El shape? Totally brilliant. She’s telling the world exactly who she is. This updated style also cleverly avoids some previously contentious points. Fans won’t exactly get annoyed!  She’s powerful, stylish and ready to join Superman’s whole family!
