Nightwing #119: A New Era Begins—This Might Be Dick Grayson's BEST Run Yet!
Whoa, Nelly! Nightwing #119, the start of a brand new storyline, is completely epic! This marks that official team change-up – Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo handing things over to Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, and Wes Abbott! As a massive Nightwing fan, I'm calling it now—this is going to be legendary!
Taylor's run? Amazing; finishing the superb, emotionally-charged "Fallen Grayson" arc and defeating "Heartless" Shelton Lyle. This setup is crucial: it establishes an environment where that fresh beginning with these new creatives is truly needed, after previous plot points were finalized and the need for another distinct style within the ongoing narrative truly became immediately obvious, without creating too many plot holes. Watters picks things up masterfully— immediately diving into a three-pronged assault on Blüdhaven. The writers, however didn't waste time! This amazing ability to kick-start a compelling, highly intense action sequence right from the very first pages really shows the writers’ unique perspective in capturing exactly just why this current arc makes total sense and works exceptionally well, especially considering this transition between writers.
This new storyline introduces a mysterious, meta-powered clown—obsessed with Nightwing! Seriously creepy! He and his shadowy crew watched Dick since childhood; that claim alone when they mention “...it was then that [they] knew he was [theirs]” highlights just how creepy this villain's approach truly is. That initial moment setting up the tone for everything to follow – playing with Nightwing and family puppets sets an unsettling stage!
New villains frequently suck, but not this clown! The writers show intense detail within the story itself, instantly showcasing their depth of knowledge around Nightwing; creating this unique portrayal using just short moments to reveal many crucial aspects within that new personality. That obsession? Terrifying; instantly making this one of the best new DC villains ever! And there's more, that possible tie-in to shady Spheric Solutions (a security company that makes villain-hunting tech) adds to that creepy mystery! This particular approach makes it perfectly unique; especially compared to previous villains who might simply only rely on simple action-related plot sequences which can ultimately hurt that specific element that makes certain comics compelling – this relies much less on that overly emphasized action and focuses much more on using specific descriptions of both character's interaction and personality!
The initial setup is perfect. The action scenes show why those multiple conflicts occurring simultaneously work! The simplicity enhances everything! This perfectly-crafted setup of three threats demonstrates why simple is effective. We’ve got the clown and Spheric Solutions, the military-armed Blüdhaven police, and escalating gang wars—all overlapping.
This smart approach connects several important plot elements; all completely connected and these factors result in total chaos within the narrative. Spheric Solutions provides weapons for police – thus a huge brawl between the cops and those criminal factions emerges, resulting in another significant turning point and a confrontation that involves Nightwing's actual expertise.
The writing? Amazingly well-done; the entire dialogue is pitch-perfect; instantly recognizing Nightwing's unique voice. But the writing is not the only thing this episode did well, It shows his raw competence without downplaying those sarcastic lines that define the character! It also showcases the best of Nightwing.
Watters' work even creates this amazingly clever, yet completely fitting approach: The escalating violence brings out that strategy; using it for those new confrontations involving gang wars that makes total sense for those events occurring within Blüdhaven. His method – inspired by Red Hood (another awesome character). He does his older brother's plan, albeit with non-lethal force! That brilliant choice enhances how special Nightwing’s approach really is and instantly shows a bold direction for this character and a compelling narrative development.
This wouldn’t have worked without those visuals. Dexter Soy’s art nailed Nightwing’s iconic style: that irresistible charm along with that totally badass fighting style; both shown incredibly well through highly effective artistic techniques and use of colors in those action sequences that enhance and portray his legendary fighting style.
That scene dodging Spheric Solution's lasers? The perfect visual metaphor – demonstrating flexibility, “flippiness,” flair – exactly why Nightwing is so famous!
Watters and Soy's Nightwing is just perfection! This really emphasizes why I, a massive Nightwing fan for a really long period, instantly love this portrayal. Watters’ brilliant use of the main character, Dick Grayson’s unique personality creates something instantly memorable, emphasizing those key details; instantly capturing everything awesome about Nightwing, balancing competence and personality. And Soy’s art? Makes everything completely iconic. If you’re an existing Nightwing fan, go read this now. If you aren’t? You're missing out and seriously need to look into it. The artistic representation is one of the greatest ever created! This new beginning could redefine Nightwing’s narrative completely!
