Meet the Outliers! Marvel's New X-men: powers and Backstories Revealed!
Marvel's Hottest New X-Men Team: The Outliers!
Hold onto your mutant powers, folks! Marvel Comics just dropped a bomb with its newest X-Men team—the "Outliers"! This crew just debuted in Uncanny X-Men #3 (written by Gail Simone, art by David Marquez) and this group are already generating some buzz. These newcomers got a unique introduction training with Rogue and her New Orleans X-Men. We're diving deep into their crazy abilities and backstories, and that super-intense training exercise reveals a whole lot more.
This new group of mutants went through various intense, immersive and often uniquely designed training exercises, providing moments of both levity, dramatic tension and moments that could easily transition into other storyline plots and scenarios. Those intense training segments were interspersed with deeply personal flashbacks revealing their family backgrounds, their incredibly unique powers, and that crazy thing that made them run and become X-men. Prepare yourselves; because there’s plenty to get through.
Jitter: The Academic Prodigy with a Powerful, Time-Limited Ability!
Sofia Yong, aka Jitter (from Singapore), is a seriously gifted student; but endured serious bullying due to her academic performance, but also her stutter. That trauma pushed her powers to the surface. One brutal confrontation results in permanent injuries to one of her bullies, adding additional weight and demonstrating that there’s immense responsibility attached to being a mutant; as her intense emotions from that moment triggered that immense and rather unique power that impacts her throughout her story and throughout the storyline.
Jitter's power? Mastering ANY skill with focus, but ONLY for one minute. Once it's gone, she's back to her regular self! She wears a stopwatch because those moments require immediate reactions from a power which limits its effectiveness to only very small, finite and tightly managed windows of opportunity.
Ransom: The Heartless Mutant With Black Hole Powers!
Valentin Correra, aka Ransom (from Buenos Aires), had a rough start. His parents viewed him as “broken” – since he lacked a heart, creating a very problematic emotional space and narrative element within their family. That created significant complications that lead to a terrible incident in his history where he got shot fourteen times during a kidnapping attempt, because his wealthy parents couldn't come up with that much ransom. These unfortunate circumstances resulted in an equally unexpected benefit and is why he becomes part of this storyline! Those bullets trigger his mutation—leaving him with an awesome black hole!
That's right. He has this black hole instead of a heart—allowing him to absorb matter for power! This provides enormous utility; absorbing those bullets initially was just a first step in revealing his true potential.
Calico: The Psychic Horse Rider on Fire!
Becca Constance Simon-Pinette (aka Calico) from Clintwood, Virginia. She is a genuinely gifted individual who was sheltered. That trauma, from overprotective parents who hate mutants, triggers when fire devastates her home! It demonstrates her extremely close relationship and powerful bond to Ember and to all those other people whom she grew to love! Then there's a shocking and unexpected death in her immediate family members, resulting in the escape; showing what happened prior really had an unexpected but extremely crucial impact which eventually adds even more emotional resonance later!
Her mutant connection to Ember (her horse)? Total transformation ability, and these transformations engulf her and her horse in flames. And that sets up many possibilities: they morph into Pegasus, knight, and others! A seriously interesting dynamic; it emphasizes just how versatile she actually is, her own combat abilities and power being intimately linked to Ember.
Deathdream: The Spirit Summoner with Uncontrollable Power!
Hotaru (aka Deathdream), from Kyoto was born stillborn– then revived three times! Talk about near-death experiences! He had these various intense encounters. His very survival however generated an incredibly powerful and incredibly terrifying ability— he can talk to the dead and summon their spirits for awesome fighting prowess: shadows, flight, tendrils! He has really, really powerful powers.
That awesome power, sadly, also makes him ragey—as is explained within his history. And that uncontrollable nature created tension within their training and other interactions with these individuals; he's shown to have extreme problems controlling that power. This also introduces tension; potentially signaling a major part in those stories moving forward; those uncontrollable urges show a complex struggle and character flaw which might prove interesting.
Conclusion: The Outliers Rise!
Marvel's Outliers? A seriously intense, well-designed set of characters with amazing unique backstories, providing additional lore surrounding those important, dramatic aspects that creates intrigue and unexpected potential opportunities, that showcases creativity. They all had various different and rather complicated origins, demonstrating creativity, and highlighting this amazing post-Krakoa world! It really demonstrates some high levels of potential as creative new X-Men. Keep an eye on these guys. Their rise to fame, power, and future plans remains intriguing!
