Brubaker Hints New Criminal HC Will Play Out Bad Night
Beginning in 2006, Criminal brought Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips into a new chapter in their professions. The two first received praise on the DC/Wildstream series Sleeper; Criminal was their first creator-owned series. Brubaker and Phillips are able to produce the best crime/noir comic by concentrating on a different character with every story arc, therefore offering their own original interpretations of classic heists, hitmen and femme fatales. Following the sagas of entire families functioning in the criminal underground, all the tales are linked in some kind and span several historical periods.
Originally from the Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Val Staples creative team, "Bad Night" first ran in Criminal (Vol. 2) #4-7. "Bad Night" centered on Jacob Kurtz, the figure shown in Brubaker's email preview graphic. Originally specialized in making fake money, Kurtz finally developed a detective strip called "Frank Kafka, P.I." after going through a nervous breakdown following the unexpected loss of his wife. Referring to the events of "Bad Night, where Kurtz was drawn into a criminal plot by an alluring woman and her dangerous boyfriend," the sample artwork describes Kurtz having yet another breakdown in 2007. Since Brubaker hinted of a follow-up to "Bad Night" ever since the original narrative ran, it will be highly interesting if the new Criminal HC is revealed.
Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker Are Working On Their First Criminal Story Since 2019
Brubaker and Phillips always return regularly to the universe of Criminal even though they have gone on to produce some unforgettable comics in the years afterward. 2019 was the last publication of a new Criminal comic when the epic "Cruel Summer" plot came to an end. Fascinating enough, this new Criminal volume will be the first published since Brubaker and Phillips turned away from monthly comics and into unique Graphic Novels, so it will be interesting to see what the pair come up with "in a book that will be quite long," Brubaker says.
Though Brubaker says the new Criminal HC won't be available until "sometime in the first half of next year," the announcement is thrilling but fans should temper their expectations. Houses of the Unholy is expected on August 14 of this year, hence Brubaker and Phillips fans won't have to wait too long to read their next collaboration. Fans of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips have much to look forward in the next years as a new criminal comic releases just in time for the forthcoming TV show.
Sean Phillips and Ed Brubaker Return to CRIMINAL Just in Time for New TV Series
Returning to the realm of their comic series Criminal, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are in perfect timing for the upcoming Amazon TV show premiere next year. Finally providing a long-promised sequel to an earlier volume of the long-running series in what may be the largest story yet, a new Criminal hardback is the next endeavor of the revered crime pair.
Ed Brubaker announced the news in his most recent email, in which the author addresses the most current casting announcements for the much awaited TV adaptation. Apart from distributing news from the set, Brubaker also revealed the latest hardcover Graphic Novel by Phillips and Brubaker would be a trip back to Criminal. Brubaker notes, " Sean is about 30 pages into drawing our next book, which is a return to CRIMINAL but in the OGN hardback format." Brubaker also provides pencils by Sean Phillips, suggesting that the narrative will center Jacob Kurtz, the cartoonist protagonist of Criminal: Bad Night.
