Creature Commandos: A Darker Take

The DC Comics universe just gave fans a new horror comic called DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #1 (released in 2024). This series re-imagines a group of unlikely heroes in a grittier, darker version than the Suicide Squad.

What's even cooler, is the series is getting its own TV show on HBO Max coming December 5th, 2024.

A New Take on Task Force X

Even for those who haven’t ever read Creature Commandos before, jumping into the DC Horror Presents is not going to be a challenge at all. The story will be a very simple introduction into this lesser known and yet, still incredibly popular group within the DC universe.

The comic book series began in 1980 with Weird War Tales #93 and has become quite famous with a bunch of creatures, and misfits who go into a unique situation during World War II. It seems the TV series is going to be different in terms of when the story will take place. However, they did stay true to their main plot concept.

The main characters remain similar in this latest installment, that still follows these monsters in their missions.
Elliot "Lucky" Taylor ( a Frankenstein's Monster)
Wanda Griffith (a werewolf)
Mina Rhodes (resembling a Gorgon)
Vincent Velcro (a vampire)
A new character: Dr. Barbara West
A human lead: Lt. Matthew Shrieve

If you want some seriously amazing twists that help make Creature Commandos stand out in this world, Dr. West will add some intrigue. That includes her role as the team's medical lead while being a creature herself!

Creature Commandos Versus Suicide Squad

What makes Creature Commandos a total win is that it’s just like the Suicide Squad but even more compelling! The team members are coerced into doing missions. Just like how Amanda Waller runs things with her team in Suicide Squad, but here's where things become different. There are so many reasons why this will become so memorable, from the special, exciting storyline to how amazing the characters truly are. They have special gifts and their approach to missions will bring the audience even more compelling characters than ever before. They will certainly be in high demand and already this has the hype building!

Even the story has these monsters getting bribed for participating! However, Creature Commandos manages to take a whole new approach from that! By bringing in lesser known or even new characters, the tone in Creature Commandos feels so much grittier, and has a deeper emotional layer and stakes are much higher! These make the story really feel epic. For many, a darker version is far more satisfying and compelling!

New and Reimagined Characters

What was even more awesome, when taking a deeper look at this amazing show, it revealed that there were even more changes made! It wasn't only Dr. West who got added as a unique element! Some older characters may have gotten a remix in this version! Elliot "Lucky" Taylor, Vincent Velcro and Lt. Shrieve appeared in previous iterations, Wanda Griffith and Mina Rhodes look like brand new additions or remixes. Fans may already be connecting with past characters and might recognize how these characters are being re-imagined! For example, Warren Griffith was the team's original werewolf and the newest version changed the gender for the character in an inspiring way. While Medusa (once known as Myrra Rhodes) got some redesign work!

If you weren’t sure what else is great about this show, I hope you'll discover who's behind this comic series! I wasn’t paying close attention until I got immersed in the story. Turns out, the creative force behind Creature Commandos is none other than David Dastmalchian who's no stranger to superhero roles!

He’s known to bring an incredible energy and excitement for all viewers and that also means his special appearance and those fans who watched him play the beloved Polka-Dot Man will definitely recognize just what kind of stories this writer/actor loves. And in a fascinating turn. He's even brought those talents to give some new excitement for these Creature Commandos characters!

What's especially interesting, is that Dastmalchian’s work and these new characters bring a much different version that those that grew up with the Suicide Squad comics. What really creates something exciting and powerful is the Creature Commandos will make fans really get invested as there is so much that hasn’t been explained! In fact, there's no reason to hesitate for new fans of this iconic brand as they will quickly become absorbed and be excited for what’s in store for these classic DC comics.
