Batman's Terrifying 'At Least': Eclipso's Possession & the Dark Knight's Fall

Holy Terror! Batman's Most Terrifying Quote EVER!

Batman's Chilling "At Least": When the Dark Knight Goes Darker

Things get seriously creepy in Batman/Superman: World's Finest #32 (written by Mark Waid, art by Adrián Gutiérrez). This issue shows what happens when Eclipso (the Spirit of Wrath) possesses Superman and Batman, and creates a situation with devastating consequences!  The results are pretty horrific, showing some seriously terrifying implications which are only apparent later in that story!

Eclipso crashes down to Earth after unleashing chaos on the Watchtower, possessing those two superheroes.   His goal? Total global domination; this goal alone adds even more tension. Using their powers combined is just…terrifying.  That makes for some of the best action sequences seen; yet is ultimately hampered because those moments show the sheer, impossible scope for power when such power levels combine and creates this unexpected problem for many. Eclipso’s plan uses their powers in completely monstrous ways.

And then comes that incredibly short, unbelievably terrifying quote. The Spectre tells Batman that staying under Eclipso’s control will result in millions dying.  Batman’s response? A chilling "at least.” Two words. It's terrifyingly short. But completely devastating. The brevity itself shows that deeply entrenched cynicism – making that seemingly innocuous response a chilling portrayal of how deep that depravity ultimately lies beneath that familiar dark knight we've come to know and expect. This response also shows his deeply unsettling insight into his powers' true potential. This really makes you question the dark possibilities underlying that well-known character. We don't even see the immediate threat—it’s all in those few words! These really show just how deep the evil within him could go! We see this evil emerge because those terrible moments allow these dark aspects within to appear.

When Good Guys Go Bad: Evil Superman and Batman Unleashed

Batman/Superman:Worlds Finest #32 (2024) Batman says

Evil Batman? We’ve seen it before! But the team-up of Evil Batman AND Superman is something different entirely. There are many interpretations that explore what these characters do with their powers– but those storylines tend to differ immensely; yet this portrayal uses a method seen previously in Superman/Batman: “Absolute Power”, presenting an incredibly dystopian future for those two characters which are both combined with these characters' inherent strengths: Batman has his skills, tech, money, Superman's pure power; creating something way beyond what might even be possible!

That quote alone becomes extremely important because it demonstrates what those capabilities combined mean, exactly just why a unified attack by both Batman and Superman would mean. Batman’s resources can unleash serious destruction – especially during those sequences where other villains use them; demonstrating just how incredibly skilled and incredibly deadly Batman could be in this exact circumstance.

Justice League and Justice Society team up, but this battle's a lost cause. Even The Spectre (God's wrath incarnate) realizes just how dangerous this truly is. He takes some seriously extreme measures– creating an illusion of Robin's death–completely shaking Batman out of Eclipso’s control, ultimately revealing exactly why those choices matter and saving billions from those impossibly strong villains which had initially shown so much threat!

Batman’s response— "at least"— it's haunting, folks! He already knows what both he and Superman are capable of.  He sees the catastrophic outcomes waiting— a dark future that gives you serious chills and reveals the monstrous capabilities possible should they fail.

The quote reveals the horrifying implications and makes this particular storyline in this DC Comic book absolutely worth remembering. It reminds us heroes are just…human—capable of this horrifying darkness.
