One Piece Still Pleases Even with Spoilers
I found myself eager to just get through the East Blue Saga since I knew what epic experiences lay ahead, but many that enter the series blindly fall in love with it after reading Chouchou's history or Luffy aiding Nami at Arlong Park. Still, the first episodes evoke the most nostalgia and I started defending the adorable character designs and early 90s style animation.
Having said that, Eiichiro Oda's world-building was the first thing that really captivated me about the series. Even though I first saw the Alabasta Arc a few years ago, I can still clearly recall the absolute delight I experienced witnessing the cute kungfu dugongs under Luffy's training and the Supersonic Duck Squadron headed by Karoo. I was pleasantly surprised since cute animals were the last thing I expected from an action-adventure show meant for teenage guys. Just how emotional One Piece might get also startled me. That would not be the last time the show would cause me to cry; the earliest incident I recall being brought to tears came from Chopper's history. Robin's past was undoubtedly the last straw, and combined with the amusing anarchy of the arc, it grabbed me totally by the time Enies Lobby rolled around. One Piece's Backstories never failed to play with my emotions, even if I had been spoilt, which only goes to show just how brilliantly written they are.
One Piece boasts some startling twists that even spoilers cannot ruin.
Though events like the disclosure of Luffy's Gears and Ace's sad death surely have great shock value, they are not essential for appreciating One Piece. Knowing what all of Luffy's Gears were and how they operated did not make their ultimate introduction any less thrilling, even in the instance of Gear Five.
Though I had heard rumors of Gear Five, it seemed so ludicrous that I doubted it could be genuine until I finally caught up with the manga, which only made it all the more startling. Likewise with the emotional turns in One Piece. Though I knew all along Ace would die at Marineford, it did not lessen her suffering or take away from witnessing Luffy's suffering at the loss or how he rediscovered hope when he remembered he still had people to defend. Even the passing of the Going Merry turned out to be far more devastating than I could have have ever dreamed. There are simply too many analogous instances throughout One Piece that are too long to recount; Spoilers could never portray the weight of the realization that the Minks were truly concealing Raizo all along.
I watched One Piece knowing every major spoiler and managed to surprise me.
While everyone who has dipped into One Piece will agree that the show is worth seeing all of its thousand episodes, as the online conversation about the series develops Spoilers continue to become more and more inevitable. But as someone who watched the series knowing every significant spoiler there was to know, I can personally attest that One Piece constantly has surprises in store that make the lengthy trip worthwhile.
One Piece was among the first major shōnen Anime I watched; I had seen mostly shoujo as a child. I had just started exploring shōnen with anime popular at the time, such Jujutsu Kaisen, and although I had heard of One Piece, I knew almost nothing about the series. My first ever work as a writer required me to learn as much as I could about the series apparently overnight as part of the project. Fortunately, every individual who hasn't seen One Piece has a buddy in their life who has and will leap at the notion of discussing it and that is exactly who I approached to brief me on the series that spans two decades in two hours. From the East Blue Saga to every single opponent Luffy encountered in the Grand Line and every one of Luffy's power-ups, I understood every single aspect of the Straw Hats' path up until Wano and even then, and I still found myself shockingly enjoying the series when I finally sat down to watch it.
