Isekai is awesome. It takes familiar stories and themes and does amazing things, twisting them into something completely new. It's perfect for taking older, sometimes overused, ideas and adding new depth. I'm the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire! by Yomu Mishima and Kai Nadashima (published by Seven Seas Entertainment) does this better than almost anything else out there!

The story is about Liam Sera Banfield; a supremely nice guy. After an utterly exhausting battle with his Cheating Wife's massive debt, he gets reborn into another world! That experience teaches him something profoundly meaningful. And he hates it! That life sucks. And his entire world-view completely shifts; embracing his complete opposite side and to start another life. Yet that prior ‘nice guy’ personality won't be easy to escape. What a fantastic start, right?! This setup highlights those moments when extreme conditions really help characters to dramatically alter their outlook for a more extreme possibility than before, resulting in unpredictable changes. And his efforts are utterly, utterly hilarious!

This book details what it takes; it highlights how deeply personal and internal these decisions are for the involved characters, it also makes those events memorable and impactful. And the conclusion will be deeply relatable; those experiences involve immense challenges in which overcoming the existing good within this character requires constant vigilance.

The journey is deeply thought-provoking. Many other stories quickly pass over these moments of changing morality. This work does the complete opposite and this detailed approach means understanding characters who really embrace evil like Eren Yeager (Attack on Titan) or Ken Kaneki (Tokyo Ghoul), those struggles are far easier to understand, becoming relatable for audiences! The writers did a great job conveying those important parts, without it ever feeling dull, creating that very creative, extremely engaging blend of emotional struggles and that very expected action scenes that most Isekai stories tend to feature and love so much!

The Unexpected Challenges of Being Evil (Even for an Evil Overlord!)

This book also brilliantly conveys that being evil might not be simple. Even as Liam tries to be this utterly evil overlord—this deeply bad guy— that lifelong ‘goodness’ won't disappear! He’s constantly battling his urges to help people, to apologize. That internal conflict is hilarious and often exhausts him; even leaving that newly reborn villain weak, totally vulnerable – that's a dangerous aspect considering what a bad position to be in he's currently positioned in!

Then the insane plot twist: Liam's evil plans are accidentally good! That throws the whole idea of ‘evil’ into total chaos. What if being evil—completely and utterly bad— actually did good things by accident? The book goes there, showcasing several key issues within many narratives; emphasizing the ambiguity surrounding those themes relating to morality and character agency; without ever being overtly political, creating a great creative framework.
