Dragon Ball Daima Solves Potara Fusion Mystery (But Creates New Ones!)

Dragon Ball Daima: Finally, An Explanation (and a Rewrite!) of That Annoying Potara fusion plot hole!

Dragon Ball Daima: Solving a DB Super Mystery (and Maybe Creating Some New Ones!)

Holy moly, folks! After years of head-scratching and endless online debates, the Dragon Ball universe finally gave us an answer to that age-old Potara earring fusion mystery. Dragon Ball Daima, the latest anime installment and surprise announced at NYCC 2023, tackles that head-on in its very first episode, directly referencing how Supreme Kai and Kibito unfused – despite the general assumption in previous works that these fusions should've been permanent.  This immediately generates another important consideration: just how exactly could something this easily ignored, and now potentially permanently resolved, even become something this notable across various online conversations!

For those unfamiliar, the Potara earrings are used for fusion. And those fused Kais are supposed to fuse permanently. Yet in Dragon Ball Super Supreme Kai and Kibito, who had fused way back in Dragon Ball Z, inexplicably unfused.   This led to an internet wildfire – causing major frustration in dedicated fans, as many pointed to the glaring inconsistencies regarding those previously held beliefs about fusion, further emphasizing a deeper, existing problem within that vast universe: How much of those key thematic concepts are being respected, changed and redefined.

Majin Buu and the Gas That Broke Up Vegito (And Other Kais Too)!

Dragon Ball Super tried explaining things by saying Supreme Kai wished on the Dragon Balls.  But Daima gives a whole new story, and that might even actually make some more sense compared to prior explanation, using a rather surprising approach. The fusion of Supreme Kai and Kibito’s situation involved Majin Buu: It turns out those two let Majin Buu absorb them, separating when Buu absorbed those beings, functioning like Vegito (Goku/Vegeta’s Potara fusion) did. It really makes sense, as it would work according to the way fusion behaved in previous events.

That was surprisingly creative; and rather simple too, generating that necessary consistency and bringing that earlier plot element into something more significant by linking this specific moment with that previous event involving Buu.  Kibito explains that a mysterious gas in Buu’s body breaks up Potara fusions.  This additional detail adds an additional reason, highlighting this mysterious, almost biological factor that also impacted how fusions break up! Supreme Kai, showing those more comical traits adds a touch of humorous cynicism and shows another important, creative decision in this title, generating those small points which enhance enjoyment!

Rewriting the Rules of Fusion: More Questions Than Answers?

Dragon Ball Super tried defining things regarding fusion rules, too:  only Kais' fusions are supposedly permanent. Mortals only fused temporarily, typically for an hour. This made the splitting of Vegito (during that clash with Zamasu) easier to explain.

Now Daima just completely tossed that rulebook. It completely shifts what exactly caused that Goku/Vegeta unfusion—now tied completely to Buu. Now, we aren’t quite certain that other earlier established details remain, whether that other version involving time limits remain in play too; adding even more unexpected considerations which show that an attempt at clarifying existing details merely complicates things further, but that doesn’t detract from the surprising effect and importance.

Conclusion: Daima's Bold Rewrite Adds Flavor and New Questions!

Dragon Ball Daima did solve one huge problem; creating a cohesive story line that tied up various existing storylines without requiring excessive explanations or needing retcons from outside; a brilliant solution showing how the show intends to use a unique combination of its predecessors; both from DBZ, Super and elsewhere; this allows a consistent way of showing that all those plot points previously disregarded, are actually taken seriously! While Daima attempts a solution however– this might even create some unexpected questions for the entire franchise itself. That entire situation however shouldn’t really diminish that creative success from creating a rather concise and clever resolution to that age-old problem! This shows what could potentially happen, showcasing just how Dragon Ball will always find ways to change that existing universe without fully contradicting previous narrative points. The potential consequences should continue to remain very surprising and intriguing for many fans involved! The initial episode showed some creative brilliance.
