Final-round Grammy voting concluded Friday January 3rd initiating a highly anticipated predictions period for General Field category wins that includes Album Record and Song of the Year along with Best New Artist which is highly valued in the music industry. Producer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year now feature within General Field categories demonstrating an increasing importance to many voting Grammy members this year .
Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan received nominations in each of the “Big Four” categories with Daniel Nigro receiving nods in album record song of the year and also producer category specifically for Roan and Olivia Rodrigo this demonstrates high impact production. This event presents history in making within several categories, particularly focused on whether Beyoncé will take album of the year having experienced four previous defeats in this very category. Beyoncé’s husband Jay-Z brought her past loses to the Grammys telecast to increase awareness that this record is due, his statements amplified conversations and the current atmosphere at the awards. Beyoncé holds record with 32 Grammys she is waiting for this main recognition while she has already the highest amount of other awards.
Nominees for Album of the Year include Andre 3000’s New Blue Sun Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet Charli XCX’s BRAT Jacob Collier’s Djesse Vol 4 Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department. Only Collier’s album was omitted in their genre category and traditionally any of these can win the Album of the Year though the album also gets the genre specific nod, Cowboy Carter a Best Country Album contender could become the first country album win after Kacey Musgraves’s Golden Hour in 2018. Charli XCX’s nominated as best dance electronic album is the first from that category to take top award after Daft Punk’s win back in 2014 and André 3000 would be first Jazz to win since Herbie Hancock in 2008. Taylor Swift is now positioned to achieve fifth win in this specific category plus two consecutive wins making it more impactful than any previous wins.
Billie Eilish and André 3000 both previously won in this award category and if Andre wins this will show strong success of a solo project. Chappell Roan if she wins for first studio album will be since Billie Eilish victory five years prior and will add extra hype to future production projects. Cowboy Carter features collaboration by Paul McCartney Stevie Wonder Willie Nelson Dolly Parton Miley Cyrus Post Malone Shaboozey Jon Batiste Gary Clark Jr. The-Dream Rhiannon Giddens Pharrell Nile Rodgers and Raphael Saadiq which might increase its potential for a win. Beyoncé's live performance on Netflix during a Houston NFL game created additional buzz right before final voting period for all to see her amazing performance on TV which has the potential to shift voter outlook. The ongoing competition of Beyonce with Taylor Swift with past successes provides the storyline and excitement that fans crave. If Swift wins again some might feel uncomfortable over Beyonce’s snub in similar fashion to Adele win despite being highly deserved.
Nominees in Record of the Year are The Beatles “Now and Then” Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” Charli XCX’s “360” Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather” Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck Babe!” Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight”. Billie Eilish currently stands as the only nominee with previous wins in this category which totals two from Bad Guy and Everything I Wanted if she wins she joins Paul Simon and Bruno Mars as three-time winners, all through their solo work. Fortnight was also excluded for the category of Best Pop Duo performance giving concern for winning this specific award. The Beatles’ “Now and Then” although a unique contender also does not stand on it’s own among prior historical recordings in this area and if The Beatles won this year McCartney would complete winning every of the “Big Four” but this would take much longer. Beyonce a record nine nominations in this area has no victories showing an unusual relationship with this Grammy Award, however Chappell Roan “Good Luck Babe” demonstrates a high quality and strong narrative story making the recording stand out and more Grammy worthy. Kendrick Lamar "Not Like Us” proves its exceptional quality even outside its feud context being only second hip-hop entry after Childish Gambino win showing strong promise to break previous norms. Six female solo acts also share this category that has the potential for vote splitting among them. Kendrick Lamar is on a great course and very likely to receive the award according to many insiders.
Nominees in the Song of the Year are “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” “Birds of a Feather” “Die With a Smile” “Fortnight” “Good Luck Babe!” “Not Like Us” “Please Please Please,” “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Grammys removed three previous song writers (Jerrell Jones Joe Kent and Mark Williams) from “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” the song originally interpolated from J-Kwon’s 2004 song “Tipsy” even though they will receive certificates not trophies. Billie Eilish Finneas D’Mile Mars all are prior two-time winners here so if any wins in this year, they achieve three wins within this specific category breaking prior history showing this could happen this year. Beyoncé already won in 2010 for Single Ladies while the current trend shows women having double the award numbers with Billie Eilish also having 2 awards and only other double winners in the category is Adele making it difficult to break current status quo. Taylor Swift holds record eight nominations here without any actual wins showing the difference between Songwriting accolades over many Grammy Awards already won during the course of her career. The strong performance of “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and “Texas Hold ‘Em” nominated in Best Country Song showing a path country style wins a top award that Lady A achieved 14 years before. "Not Like Us" also in the Rap song could become only second Hip hop award since “This Is America” victory. If Billie Eilish and Finneas win they will be second set of song writers since D'Mile who have received back to back awards and their achievements would make them the youngest set to ever receive such recognition.
Nominees for Best New Artist feature Benson Boone Sabrina Carpenter Doechii Khruangbin RAYE Chappell Roan Shaboozey and Teddy Swims. If Sabrina Carpenter Doechii RAYE or Chappell Roan win then this will represent 8 straight female solo awards making the category a landmark achievement for women in music. Boone Shaboozey or Swims if they win would be first male since Chance The Rapper won 8 years previously, Khruangbin would be first duo/group since Macklemore Ryan Lewis win 11 years prior creating high value for this award category for multiple music demographics. Sabrina Carpenter Chappell Roan have six nominations giving leg up for this victory while Shaboozey having five nominations shows serious talent. Doechii and RAYE having 3 nominations and each would make any previous year achievements pale into comparison. Most individuals would see Carpenter and Roan to fight head to head as they are most present for other “big four” awards even with different creative outputs as well as fan bases to support the different performers and each of their approaches to music performances. Chappell Roan is considered by many critics and other artists as a more innovative and creative performance artist that some consider more deserving based on overall talent that is offered.
Producer of the Year non classical sees nominees Alissia Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II Ian Fitchuk Mustard Daniel Nigro. Jack Antonoff winner last three years, failed for nomination, even when being most present with two album nominations which shows current issues of influence on popular music by individuals. The Nominating Committee which is usually a closed session by Grammy officials chose five members, taking authority from voting members and not following original nomination structure. Alissia is first women nominated, her listed credits not nominated in main categories which might weaken any chances of winning. Nigro is nominated with album record and song of year nominations. Mustard also for record year nomination on "Not Like Us.” D’Mile for Song of Year for co-writing "Die With a Smile.” Nigro may prevail from being most nominated but this will be close victory with very fine detail.
Songwriter of the Year nominees include Jessi Alexander Amy Allen Edgar Barrera Jessie Jo Dillon RAYE all demonstrating some of the strongest and most impressive writing talent today. Previous winners are all male including Tobias Jesso Jr Theron Thomas and this is being challenged this year with four of the five nominations to females. Both Barrera and Dillon receive nomination a second time, Amy Allen a second time as well in the prior three years showing strong consistency. Amy Allen who co-wrote “Please Please Please” for Carpenter and also her own work from Trolls Band Together for visual media puts her in two top contending places. A specialized committee chose winners who looked at top thirty list with access to song and lyrics with votes from select group to keep fairness in process. Amy Allen could break ground and lead women into new era of songwriter acclaim but nothing can ever be fully set in stone for this yearly show and award.
The 67th Annual Grammy Awards is slated for February 2nd. Many musicians like Beyoncé Doechii Charli XCX and Sabrina Carpenter have all been highly noted as this years highly anticipated candidates. Beyoncé is record holding for 99 career nominations and has 32 prior Grammy wins highlighting her success. The many black artists are expected to make moves to the top spots with cross genre artists showing the scope and talent of the nominated performers like Shaboozey, Doechii, Metro Boomin, and Kehlani and more in the mix.
Billie Eilish moved into favorite position for Album of Year by various UK Betting Sites and her song Birds of Feather currently tops list of most popular for Song Of The Year. Taylor Swift had odds shortening only to have them increase and she is currently trailing Eilish in major bets. Sabrina Carpenter leads for Record of the Year as current favorite. Gold Derby which combines several different polls does not have a majority candidate so further evaluation may be necessary for specific winner.
The Album Of The Year features artists with previous wins and new nominations like Charli XCX and the "Brat summer." Beyoncé with “Cowboy Carter” as stylistic pivot and showstopping performances which should make her a shoe in. Jacob Collier also makes history and breaks norms in this specific area while André 3000 may enjoy attention from his unique presentation from new age. All nominations like Chappell Roan or Sabrina Carpenter present great contenders each with strengths that may make it incredibly hard to gauge potential future winner until that final evening. Taylor Swift's popularity may be undermined by lack of public support plus there is historical issues with consecutive award recognition from past events that could shift current standings. The unpredictable results with the Golden Globe show gives an understanding that everything can change at a moment notice and that fan expectations should not be too high to start with or at least with no particular allegiance to a sole single performer.
